NATIONAL POST ONLINE | Sweet tea and dreams of butchery - Jan Cienski
GAZA CITY - For Dr. Mahmoud Zahar, a surgeon and a leading member of Hamas, the Islamic terrorist movement, the arithmetic of murder is simple. He, of course, as a leader of the movement will never be a suicide-murder bomber.
"Even if one Israeli dies for every 10 Palestinians, then the three million Palestinians can kill 300,000 Israelis," said the neatly bearded surgeon, sipping sweetened tea yesterday in his large Gaza house. So far at least 1,150 Palestinians have died since the latest fighting began in September, 2000, and more than 400 Israelis have been killed.
"We are less affected by suffering than the Israelis," Dr. Zahar said in his precisely accented English. "The Israelis' luxurious lifestyles makes them feel any small suffering. Our suffering can be bearable for our side while it will be unbearable for Israel."
